The project "Mentre Respirem" (While We Breathe) shines a light on a critical yet often overlooked public health issue: indoor air quality. Although we spend most of our time indoors, the air in these spaces can be 2 to 5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Our goal was to empower society by providing accessible data on indoor air quality across various locations in Catalonia. By sharing this information, we aimed to raise awareness, offer insights into the issue, and provide practical recommendations for improving air quality, ultimately enhancing our overall quality of life.

To achieve this, we designed an online experience that aimed to make this largely unknown issue visible to the general population. Our platform communicates scientific data in a straightforward and understandable way, warns about the risks of poor indoor air quality, and provides actionable guidelines for improving air quality at both individual and collective levels.

To address this challenge, we introduced several innovative elements:
Advanced Technology for Indoor Environments
Our project used a unique device specifically validated for measuring indoor pollution. Unlike other initiatives, this device captures a broader range of parameters than most commercially available tools, providing a more comprehensive understanding of indoor air quality.
Solution-Focused Communication
We tackled the complexity of scientific data by designing an experience that translates technical information into clear, easy-to-understand visuals.
Our strategy was not just to highlight the issue of indoor pollution but to offer practical solutions and actionable steps. By empowering people with knowledge on how to improve indoor air quality, we aimed to drive meaningful change.
Accessibility for All
We recognised that access to indoor air quality information is often limited to health-conscious individuals with higher purchasing power. Our objective was to democratise this knowledge, making it available to a wider audience beyond typical communication channels.
Focus on Public Spaces
While many projects dealing with this issue focus on the domestic sphere due to its higher economic return, we concentrated our research on public-use buildings. These are the spaces where the most vulnerable populations are often found, and where improvements can have a significant impact.
The website we developed included several key components:
Measurement Results
We shared results from indoor air quality measurements taken across various buildings in Catalonia. The most significant findings were presented in a straightforward, visual format to enhance comprehension.
Scientific Insights and Standards
We provided accessible summaries of relevant scientific studies, as well as international standards and recommendations for indoor air quality.
Interactive Guide for Improvement
To help users take action, we created an interactive guide with practical recommendations for reducing indoor air pollution. Some materials were available for download and optimised for easy sharing across digital platforms.
This project was a first step toward making indoor air quality a more visible and approachable topic. By focusing on shared spaces—rather than private homes—we aimed to highlight how this issue affects collective wellbeing, not just individual habits. The goal wasn’t to offer perfect solutions, but to make the data accessible enough to support informed decisions and small, concrete improvements where they matter most.
